Woodturner Rendezvous in Viterbo

On days 4 & 5 October there was a meeting between Turners in Viterbo,
at Mala Spina School....http://www.scuoladellegno.it/it/chi-siamo/
where men named Giacomo and Vasco were hosts of a mass of Gipsy Turners from all Italy..
With AIATL, Giacomo and Vasco organized a great event with the participation of distributors of equipment for turning, wivamac lathe, Vicmarc lathe,
and related turners who performed live demonstrations:
i had really a pleasure of knowing Jackie Ferla Tuiniuijk from Belgium
www.houtdraaier.be.
Distributor of fine woods were there too, and i got some pau violetto having in mind some jewelry projects and a piece of macassar ebony destinated on a pen project..
Two days flew away in a istant,
a lot of talkin' and turning, a fun every single moment,
part of a tribe of eternal youth,
....
like him, the Captain Vittorio:

I'm a member of AIATL, italian association of woodturner.
And on sunday morning Roberto Cecconello, the president had a speech,
which dealt with topics such as creating their own roots,
because in Italy the art of turning wood is a new matter,
he talked about a way to perform our own Art through observation of what is around us and reworking all this putting your own personal touch, which is made of our personal history and feeling.

Thanks to a Lady names Kitty Pierart was installed an exhibition of the works of the members of the association AIATL.

Cupressus Arizonica again...

both works are made turning in three different axes...

First one: Madonna with child

It's 48 cm tall x 28 wide for 5 cm thick

In the second work i tried to develop a Human face,
focusing on those two nodes, that seemed to me a perfect couple of eyes..
mouth, cheekbones, skull....were parts i try to recreat by truning in three different axes...
i call it Adam, the first face of many.
i enjoy a lot...

Boxelder burl

I told some  post ago "woodturning garden" where i found this Boxelder burl...
It's really an amazing wood, there is some blue some orange/pale red and a spalted red core...
i finish it with mix of beswax and some stuff used to polish the bufalo horn.
hope these colors will be more defined with some light oxidation..
Next Boxelder burl i think it will get some mineral oil (don't want white takin' yellow)before buffed with wax.

It's 28 cm diameter and 21 tall...
was a big burl for what i used to work...
i enjoy really a lot turning this burl,
spend an hour to sand by hand,
till 400....

i played with picasa, a free kind of photoshop to adjust the picture...
a lot of contrast to show more clean the 3D pattern....

Much tired
 Cheers

Roberto Cecconello

It's hard to find in this modern time someone who enjoy so much sharing his own passion, helping so many people take first steps in woodturning world as well and whispering good advices to anyone...
i can definetly say Roberto help me a lot since i started turn woods, with his advices, points of view and criticism...

He showed this multiaxis bowl made with Pear in a italian woodturning forum,
like always he told every step of his process, and answering all the questions that were posed.
At first glance i liked really a lot..
it was like kind a far beyond the borders of traditional turning..
i know there are some other turner who doin' unbelievable stuff above all in france,
but maybe the fact that i know already Roberto, who seem to me that the man who did it wasn't a martian...
however...in the forum
he called me to share a piece, and i totally agreed...
i call myself in this forum "ilvisionario"....
(it's an alias good friend of mine nik to me becouse i used had an hour night walk under the tree-lined boulevard that surrounds the village where I live....i didn't give a shit to anything...just looking up and around with some good music...in fact in town some started to call me "ilvisionario"...)
by the way,
i got "sghembo" the name that Roberto gave to the piece he made:
and it's AVANGUARDIA!!!
Come direbbe Freak Antoni: Non capite un cazzo, questa è avanguardia pubblico di merda!

Roberto Cecconello have a web site: http://www.artetornio.info/
Thanks a lot!

Smoke tree Wood - Staghorn - Sumac

Cotinus coggygria

Smoke tree show spectacular wood known like Sumac or Staghorn wood

Yesterday i found this place:

shrubs and bushes were cut in order to wide the road,
it seemed like a good opportunity to pick up some wood.
This morning wasn't really good weather,
but picking up worked nicely however, and i found this 25 years smoke tree cut in a piece long 2,50 meter for 12 cm diameter....mas o meno...
It has irregular growth, but i have to consider that in this bush it has to grow higher to get the light,
much competition around there...

From Wiki:

Cotinus coggygria, syn. Rhus cotinus (Eurasian smoketree, smoke tree, or smoke bush)
is a species of flowering plant in the family Anacardiaceae,
native to a large area from southern Europe,
east across central Asia and the Himalayas to northern China.

It is a multiple-branching shrub growing to 5–7 m (16–23 ft) tall with an open,
spreading, irregular habit, only rarely forming a small tree.
The leaves are 3-8 cm long rounded ovals, green with a waxy glaucous sheen.
The autumn colour can be strikingly varied, from peach and yellow to scarlet.
The flowers are numerous, produced in large inflorescences 15–30 cm (5.9–11.8 in) long;
each flower 5-10 mm diameter, with five pale yellow petals.
Most of the flowers in each inflorescence abort,
elongating into yellowish-pink to pinkish-purple feathery plumes
(when viewed en masse these have a wispy 'smoke-like' appearance, hence the common name)
which surround the small (2-3 mm) drupaceous fruit that do develop.

Smell really good, it has a kind of resin under the bark...
i don't know if its Linfa, but it is very sticky
and gives the idea to lubricate the bevel of the gouge.....

i played a bit with first,
It' strong wood, tenacious...
the colours are natural, will be finished with oil after dried and some sanding...

Cheers

Paolo
